Pillowcase Race (Camp Goodtime and Camp STIX)
I want to thank everyone who’s participating in making pillowcases this year. We are off to a tremendous start. After our Sew Day Saturday, April 18th we had 130 pillowcases turned in. We made 36 at the meeting. How wonderful is that? By the end of April, we have over 200 pillowcases completed and a bunch still out. Our working group at the Senior Center has been invaluable helping put kits together. We can’t seem to make the kits fast enough. This past Friday we put another 50 kits together and many were scooped up. Your enthusiasm is truly amazing.
This year we have two wonderful organizations we will be supporting with pillowcases this summer. Camp Goodtimes and Camp STIX. Camp Goodtimes gives children ages 8 through 17 diagnosed with cancer the opportunity to forget out their illness, their treatments and hospital visits and offer camp free of charge. Thanks to generous donations from donors like you. This year we will be providing 100 kid friendly pillowcases for Camp Goodtimes. Their camp is being held June 29th – July 3th. Camp Goodtimes/YMCA Of The Inland Northwest Camp STIX is a nonprofit organization that provides a unique summer camp experience specifically designed for children aged 9 to 16 living with Type 1 diabetes. At Camp STIX, kids can enjoy various activities while learning to manage their diabetes in a safe and fun setting. We will be providing 135 kid friendly pillowcases for their camp. Their camp is being held July 12th through July 18th. Camps/STIX Diabetes Programs It’s so awesome that we are able to support two worthy causes like this. Thanks to the generous fabric donations we received and the wonderful quilters willing to give of their time and talent to help make the campers experience that much better. You are all fabulous. If you are making pillowcases for either of these organizations, thank you! Please turn in your pillowcases at the Guild Meeting on June 2nd or the Community Service Meeting June 20th. Any remaining pillowcases will be donated to local charities throughout the year.
Quilts Donated - Thirty-eight quilts were donated to local charities the month of April. The recipients were Ronald McDonald House, Vanessa Behan Crisis Center, Spokane Veteran’s Home, Salvation Army Sally’s House and Evangaline’s House.
Upcoming Campaign – In July, we are kicking off our next Campaign, Christmas in July, to benefit Vanessa Behan’s Santa Express. We will have a sew along on Tuesday, July 14th, 9 am to 3 pm at Vanessa Behan’s Crisis Center. You can sign up at our Guild Meeting June 2nd. We are limited to 20 participants. We will also have a sew along at our Community Service meeting July 18th at Millwood Presbyterian Church, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Happy Quilting! Kim
The purpose of our Community Service Committee is to share the love of quilting and support our local charities with quilted items.
Our meetings are a great way to give back to the community, spend the day sewing with friends and meet new ones. Community Service is open to any quilter interested in charity quilting. Our members are encouraged to participate and invite a friend. At our meetings we make quilts of all sizes, pillowcases and Santa Express items. We focus on getting our quilts finished and ready for donation. You can bring your own charity project, or work on one provided by the Community Service Committee. Please bring your sewing machine, supplies and a snack/lunch; coffee is usually provided. We provide irons, ironing boards, large cutting mats and kits. We generally have several quilt bundles that need to be quilted and/or bound. Please consider taking one or more items home to work on in between meetings. Finished quilts are donated to numerous organizations in our area. We have a place for any size quilt. Here’s a link of the charitable organizations we supported in 2024. Donations made to organizations may vary year to year according to the needs of the community and items received. Meeting Dates, Times and Locations Zoom meetings - 1st Saturday of each month 9:30 a.m. to noon. Zoom information is emailed to members in advance. In-person Sew Day – 3rd Saturday of each month 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite. Zoom meeting held in December. FABRIC DONATIONS We gladly accept and appreciate fabric donations of all sizes, from fat quarters to yardage. Donations help us make more pleasing quilts for the community. All charity quilts should be made of good quality fabric, 100% cotton, flannel or Minky. We are also collecting thread (any color) at this time to help complete quilts. There are times when we receive an abundance of donations or donations outside these parameters. Be rest assured that we have a place for everything. Please review the link of small groups and organizations we assisted this past year. If you would like to make a donation to SVQG Community Service please contact Kim S. via email - svqginfo@gmail.com . We can make arrangements for items to be picked up or dropped off in- between meetings. Thank you for your support and Happy Quilting! |
OUR CURRENT CAMPAIGNS
The guild has volunteered to “Help Keep Sue’s Legacy Alive” by providing quilts to Greenacres Middle School Special Education Students. Quilts should be approximately 50 x 60 inches, bright and cheery with polka dots and or stripe binding. We donate approximately 20 to 25 quilts; the amount varies each year.
Camp Goodtimes
Our quilt guild has volunteered to provide pillowcases for Camp Goodtimes Campers. Camp Goodtimes is a summer camp for children who were stricken with cancer but are now in remission. The Guild makes 100+ standard size pillowcases. One for each camper, boys and girls ages 7 to 17. If you wish to make a pillowcase and donate to this worthy cause, we have kits available or make a few from your own stash. Here’s a link to the Easy Burrito Pillowcase pattern we use most often. VANESSA BEHAN’S SANTA EXPRESS
Santa Express is a holiday retail store for all kids in our community, many of whom make this shopping experience part of their Holiday tradition. I don't rise and shine I caffeinate and hope they have a store front for the public to purchase donated items. The proceeds from the store benefit Vanessa Behan’s Crisis Center and Nursery, a safe shelter for kids who are in crisis situations. Items we make and donate include: Reading Pillows 16”, table runners, bowl cozy, pot holders, placemats, coasters and pillowcases. We will kick off our campaign “Christmas in July” with a special class and continue during our community service meetings, kits will be provided. Please feel free to make any of these items out of your own stash. They are quick projects that can be made throughout the year. |
